On June of 1996, Patricia Gurdian de Ortiz, Ramiro Ortiz Mayorga and their parents, Lelia Debayle de Gurdian, Ramiro Ortiz Arguello and Lidia Mayorga de Ortiz, their children; Ramiro Ortiz Gurdian and Sandra Stoessel de Ortiz, Francisco Martinez and Carla Ortiz de Martinez, Francisco, Alejandro and Ana Margarita, decided to create the Ortiz Gurdian Foundation as a not for profit institution, with the objective to co-assist in the development of Nicaraguan Culture in general and specifically in the area of visual arts, to provide and fortify their projection at a local, regional and international level.
The official presentation of the Foundation was held on July 31, 1996, at the Ruben Dario National Theater. At the inauguration there was a exhibition of Latin American paintings belonging to the Ortiz Gurdian Collection. That same exhibition was presented in September of 2006, at Fundacion Paiz Museum in Guatemala City.
In light of the recuperation of the Founder and President of the Foundation, Patricia Gurdian de Ortiz, who suffered from breast cancer, the Health Program was born. In 2002, the Breast Cancer Program for Low Income Women became official and opened its doors.
At ten years after initiating its work, the Board of Directors of the Foundation had changed. Ramiro Ortiz Arguello and Lidia Mayorga de Ortiz passed away but there was an addition of new members: Maria Cecilia Zavala, wife of Francisco, Silvia Parra, wife of Alejandro and Eduardo Horvilleur, husband of Ana Margarita.
